The span of modern computer science research is considerable, and few universities are able to offer the breadth of expertise that is available in this Department. We have research groups operating across the spectrum, from fundamental theory and innovative technology, through novel hardware and software systems design, to leading-edge applications. It is our policy to maintain this breadth, and even expand it, where appropriate.
Many of our research projects are collaborations, between the groups inside the Department, or with groups in other departments and institutions, including a substantial number of industrial and commercial companies.
Our basic research attracts considerable external funding from a variety of sources, including major UK Research Councils, the European Commission, UK government, and industry. This enables us to maintain a large body of first rate postdoctoral research staff, many of whom move on to university lectureships or research-oriented posts in industry. It also helps us to maintain an internationally competitive infrastructure of equipment and other facilities.
We have a thriving research school, with many international students, often seconded by their employer during their study for a higher degree. Many of our doctoral graduates are now in highly influential positions in universities and companies all over the world.
It is important to us that, where applicable, our research leads to industrial and commercial innovation. As well as collaborating with industry in specific joint research projects, we have an active programme for technology transfer through our associated exploitation company, Manchester Informatics Ltd. We are very proud of our history of influence on industry and commerce; many of our research-oriented hardware and software system developments have been taken to the market over the years, through this and other, similar means.
Whatever your interest in computer science research, whether you wish to learn about the latest techniques and results, to consult us about solving your most pressing problems, or to commission us to undertake long-term studies on your behalf, you will find we have the expertise to help you.
